Macedonian Dynasty

Macedonian Dynasty
Greatest of Byzantine imperial dynasties. It was founded by Basil I (q.v.) in 867 and ended in 1056 with the death of Theodora (q.v.). Under a series of soldier-emperors, the most famous of whom was Basil II (q.v.), medieval Byzantium (q.v.) reached its largest territorial extent. The so-called "Macedonian Renaissance" is a convenient term for the revival of scholarship and the arts that occurred, especially under Constantine VII (q.v.).
